Stretching sentences

Stretching sentences

Today we were working at stretching our sentences to add detail in a concise and effective way.  How do you think we went???

Recycling Posters

With Mrs. Fowler we made recycling posters. We had to try and convince the reader to recycle. Here are some of the posters.

OUR OCEANS

This Term room 3’s Inquiry is about our oceans. It is still related to our print on the planet. We are looking at the good the bad and the ugly. As part of our inquiry we are visiting the Maritime Museum for a day. At the moment we are writing reports about a famous person related to the ocean. Some examples are AbelTasman and Jacques Cousteau.

The DingBat

In room 3 we have a class activity called Dingbats

You have to guess what the saying in the box is here is an example
The answer to this card is book ends because it has the two end letters of the word book. Here are some for you to try.
2           3    4
Make sure to post your answers in the comments!

Scary Stories on Garageband

Following on from writing our scary stories (which are published on this blog), we used Garageband to record reading our scary stories and composed music to create a scary atmosphere to enhance our stories. We hope you enjoy them.

Spotlight Poems

Room 3 wrote poems about spotlight at camp.
Our W.A.L.T entertain our reader by recounting spotlight.
Our S.C. Use descriptive language, include metaphors and similes, use other language features. Here are some of our examples.

Above me trees cheering people on silently, silently because they don’t want to wake their other tired friends. The Man in the Moon with his flashlight yelling 1, 2, 3, torch on as the gentle breeze carries his voice as far and fast as it can. Unlike Emma nobody tagged him. People peeking prudently from their places while Emma searches the forest floor. I hear giggling thumping and leaves shuffling about. The stars like tour guides are showing us where to go. People diving into an Olympic swimming pool filled with leaves because they hadn’t reached a tree, Emma’s torch searching for us in the darkness.

Below me the trees have chosen children they want to reach Emma. They are tripping the others with their long twisty roots, and moving their arms so they are in your way. The leaves running around with the help of the west wind, running because your weight would break every bone in their body. Rocks try to stop us by appearing in our path. They are going out of their way to make us slip back down the steep slope.  A bug crawling round as I reveal where it hides while trying to hide from Emma’s blinding torch that picks us out with the light it provides. I’m running faster than a cheetah, flying like the wind with each step I take towards Emma and victory at the top.

In front of me the towering pine. It’s bark digging into my skin like blunt needles. Its root as slippery as wet soap. The blade of light cuts through the forest searching like a hound dog for me. I notice that my classmates elbow is sticking out. I want to warn him but I would have to give myself away. The light comes round and Emma notices his elbow. The torch goes off. 1, 2, 3, Torch on. Nowhere to hide I jump onto the leaves. The crunchy dry leaves are rough against my chest. Twigs like soldiers swords poking and prodding me.  Torch Off.

Behind Me dark shadows approaching up the hill as loudly as they dare. Trees getting used like shields protecting us against the light that looks for us and prevent us from tagging Emma. The ropes tripping others and causing them to get caught by eagle eyed Emma. 12 people are out will I be next? I hope not. Heart pounding boom, boom boom. Feet thudding thump, thump thump. I continue up the hill any second now torch off 1, 2, Tag.
 Lauren

Above me the pitch black sky tries to stay hidden while out comes the bright yellow blade like torch of the moon with A flash. The leaves on the trees above me play on the silent tongue of the breeze. The shimmering shine of the full moon gleams on the calm water. The luminous stars above me appear like little dots.

Below me leaves crackling like paper being scrunched up. Twigs slide down the uneven slippery ground. Cicada’s run for their lives, to protect themselves, from getting stepped on. Outcome the gnarled knuckles of the trees roots. The sticks on the ground scratch my legs as if they’re attacking me.

In front of me I see kids running to find a tree. I can see Emma’s eager eyes from five trees away .I see there tree where Emma’s standing and try to make a run for it. In front of me I see Emma, where victory eagerly awaits me.

Behind me I see rocks tumbling down the hill behind I see Adults and children waiting for the three se ends to end, for them to run. I hear children waiting nervously, getting ready to run any second now. As I pat Emma on the back I note that victory is now mine
 Tapaswi

Above Me
The dark night sky is watching as we are playing. Emma’s flaming torch cuts through the tree. The orange moon sparkles into the corner of my eyes. I can hear faint giggles up ahead. The trees sway slowly in the calm breeze. I can see Mrs. Knofflock thumping into trees.
Below Me
My feet crack on twigs. Big hairy bugs crawl on my shoes. Below me the roots try to trip us up. The leaves are slippery.  My feet struggle to grip the ground as I hide behind a tree. The ground shakes like an earthquake.
In Front Of Me
Mrs. Knofflock is smacking Jackshen’s head against a tree. Tree bark is glaring at me. In front of me is the dark gloomy world. Emma is waiting with her torch. I see kids running like a cheetah trying to get to the next tree.
Behind Me
I can hear people running like they are running for their life. Kids whisper from tree to tree. I am almost there 1 2 3 TAG!!! YA!!! I tagged Emma.

Art Art Art

Room 3 made paintings based on Pablo Picasso’s art. First we sketched our paintings. Then drew them to full size, painted them and used black P.V.A to go over some of the lines. He are some of room 3’s master pieces.

Before we began these paintings we leant about Pablo Picasso. We found out that his paintings had 3 stages the blue period he used colors like blue and green this stage lasted for 3 years. The rose period were he used colors like pink and orange this lasted for 2 years. Lastly the cubism period  this lasted for 10 years! Pablo was born over 120 years ago and his paintings are still famous.

We also did some Picasso art on the computer using a great program called Picasso head it’s really easy to use. You should try it!

Did you ever poems

Room 3 wrote poems about their holidays. First we had to write did you ever. Then we wrote a line about something that happened in our holidays. E.G. did you ever go exploring in a dark cave. After a noun and adjective describing it (we did four of these) and then a statement to end the verse we were finished.

Here are some examples.

Mr Glumpsneeze

One night I was reading my brother bedtime stories, he chose 3 books by Dr  Seuss. Sam I am, Fox In Soxs and Doctor Seuss’ ABC.  I felt like writing a book.  I felt like a chapter book was too long and I would never finish it. So I decided to write a picture book without the pictures. It ended up sounding a lot like Dr. Seuss because I had lines like  “Will you eat it in a house will you eat it with a mouse” and “I’m a zizzer zazzer zuzz as you can plainly see” and lots of ridiculous names like Mr. Knox and wily waterloo. Here is my story.
Mr Glumpsneeze
When Mr. Glumpsneeze moved in next door
Nothing was the same as it was before
He decided to speak to the government one day
And you will never guess what he did say
Ice-cream should be a vegetable eaten with every meal
Cause Ice-cream being a dessert is really unreal
Soon money grew on trees and there were chocolate making bees
All because of Mr. Glumpsneeze
Children made the rules and there were no such thing as schools
But things really got bad the day he made all grownups go away
Nobody had money and I started to miss my mummy
But worst of all there were no people working in the ice-cream factory
We kids couldn’t make it
Not a tiny bit
I decided that’s enough Mr. Glumpsneeze had to be stopped
I marched to his house
And said bring our parents back or else
You must leave Mr. Glumpsneeze and take your money growing trees and your chocolate making bees
We don’t like your new rules we miss the adults and ice-cream being a VEGTABLE is really unreal
So he packed up his bags and his pet eel and he left the house for real
I imaged life would be the same as it was before
Until Mr. Gobblebrush moved in next door

Which World?

These are our murals that we have been doing in Room three with Mrs Fowler.
We have done them in two halves, one half is a good world and the other have is a polluted world.
A nuclear power plant is a thermal power station in which the heat source is a nuclear reactor. As is typical in allconventional thermal power stations the heat is used to generate steam which drives a steam turbine connected to a generator which produces electricity.
The windmills are designed to make energy using the wind, the wind turns gears inside them which create more energy and power your home.
Because of farmers having to pay tax when their cows fart (they are releasing methane into the air)scientists have designed pink inflatable back packs that cows can wear so when they fart the methane is caught it runs through a tube into the back pack. Cows release 70 gallons of methane a day!

Learning about copyright and creative commons

Mrs. Prescott showed Room 3 about copyright © . She told us about creative commons codes that allow you to choose what people can and can’t do with your work. This is a great video we watched about copyright

 Check out what we learnt

Camp disaster letters

We wrote disaster letters related to our experiences at camp. We had to make them our parent’s worst nightmare using the power of suggestion and not stating facts. We also had to show the positive side in everything. See if your child had a disaster at camp in this letter.

100% the truth as far as we recall

My Amazing time at camp.
Dear Mum,
I’m having an awesome time here at Typhoid Lodge. Mr Mac is making us write to you in case you read about the tornado in the newspaper and were worried. Only two sheep, our dinner, Williams’s suitcase and the dorm roof went missing. Apart from a few wet nights, I’m having a great time.
Our first activity was survival. It took ages to get Davin out of the long drop. After that we put up tents. Harry’s eye had a battle with a pole and the pole won. During the mud run I got a mouthful of mud but luckily Mike pulled me out before I completely ran out of oxygen. Making camp fires was fun. Caleb’s tent now has a third door, unfortunately he cannot close it. To add to that Cory is going to look pretty weird till his hair grows back.
Kayaking was great fun. In a race three of Connie’s teeth came out and now she is SIX DOLLARS RICHER!  She isn’t smiling as much as she normal does though. The teacher was awesome she didn’t mind that the life jackets were eaten by a bear. There was a log blocking our way. Trent and his kayak made a great battering ram. To make things even cooler Trent can now do a triple back flip dive! The best bit was seeing how a tourniquet works all in a space of five minutes.
I loved the climbing wall it was awesome. Even though the teacher got dehydrated and was back at the lodge we think we got the harness right, can you Google if it’s meant to go round your arms for me so I can tell the next group. Oh and Kyla thinks crutches are better than wheel chairs.
Archery was great. I caught my dinner! I was wondering if you think I have allergies to possum meat? We got to make a human stretcher and we know it works as we carried Deen up to the ambulance on it.
Horse riding was awesome the teacher agreed that the puke green helmets didn’t match our clothes so we didn’t have to wear them. We only jumped two fences and only Tor got an egg on his head.
We didn’t do the rest of the games as we were looking for Jackshen. I got to ride in a rescue jeep it was awesome. When the driver fell out it was even more fun. Did you know petrol is extremely flammable, on the bright side we wouldn’t have found Jackshen if it wasn’t for the fire. Mr Mac got mad at Jackshen but to be fair to Jackshen he had told Mr Mac during the tornado that he was going hiking. Mr Mac didn’t hear him.
Typhoid lodge is awesome don’t worry about me I should be back Thursday if Jake fixes the bus. It’s not his fault Tor crashed it.

P.S. how long has it been since I had my last tetanus injection.

Digging up the dirt in Room 3

Today was the first day of digging and eww yuck what a smelly job that was.
We were interested to see what had happened and think about why.
We found some interesting things out as you can see below.

Where has the pineapple
skins gone??????
The pineapple skins have decomposed, decompose means to rot through a chemical or bacterial reaction that breaks it down to fall apart in the earth.

What is Methane?
Methane is an odourless colourless gas that harms the earth. Farmers are getting taxed when their cows fart because they are releasing methane. They release about 70 gallons of methane A DAY!

What is compost?
Compost is soil leaves and other materials that have decomposed. Composting is easy to do and is good for your plants. It also prevents many foodscraps from being landfilled.

Year 6 Camp

Room 3 spent an exciting 4 days at  Year 6 camp at Lakewood Lodge.

Survival

You go out into the bush for a day and night, cook over a camp fire,  sleep in tents, run through mud, orienteer our way around, challenge our strength and endurance and work together as a team.  To finish a long day we then went eeling and roasted marshmallows after a few scary stories around the campfire;

Sitting in the camp fire are. The last person
there does 10 push ups!

Playing 'Plug It'. Plug the hole to float
the ping pong balls to the top

Mud run , through the mud, over under and through the obstacles to get the puzzle piece,
solve the puzzle- first to win the challenge!

Kayaking
Emma taught us how to kayak at one point we had to make a line and walk or run across the boats Mrs Millar was the only parent to do this part.
